You are familiar with the central field-specific vocabulary.
You are able to communicate in English with patients coworkers.
You are able to read professional texts from your field, and can find the essential information and report that in either spoken or written form.

Content

The job description of a (public health) nurse
Building and activating field-specific vocabulary.
Communication with a patient in field-specific contexts (patient interviews), taking samples and doing procedures (measuring blood pressure, taking samples, catheterisation, infusion, instructing taking medication)
Professional texts, oral and written reporting.

Materials

Dear Patient - English for Nursing (Metsäportti, Tuohimäki, Karhumäki 2017 edition or newer)

Teaching methods

After the course, you are able to:
- describe your studies and future work
- conduct a patient interview
- give directions in procedures (measuring blood pressure, taking blood and urine samples, catheterisation, inserting an IV...)
- describe sensations of pain
- use field-specific vocabulary: anatomy, professions, wards, illnesses, equipment, patient room, medications
- talk about surgical procedures: directing a patient, giving home care instructions, typical surgeries
