Objective

The students know how to tell about their education and work experience in English and they are able to sell and promote their expertise in an international setting.
At the end of the course, the students are familiar with the central business terminology in English.
The students can apply the terminology and knowledge of the business environment when presenting a business in speaking and writing.
In addition, the students can search for and understand information in sources in English and are able to tell the main points based on reading or listening.
The students can use language aids, such as dictionaries.

Content

Applying for work and marketing your strengths and skills in an international business environment (Eg CV and Job Application, job interview, video resume). Central vocabulary in business English (vocabulary on businesses and work, organisation structures, operations, reorganisation and the international business environment. Basics in Information search and reporting.

Materials

Course book: Niskanen, T., Vetter, J. & Urbom, R. 2009 (or newer version). Business Express. Helsinki: WSOY.Material in Moodle and other e-learning materials. Teacher informs about the material during the course.

Teaching methods

Participation in contact lessons and independent study in Moodle, spoken and written assignments, individual work and teamwork, possible exam or word tests (spoken and written exams). Peer and self-assessment. Skills level B2 according to CEFR.

Exam schedules

Two consecutive general exams (or exam dates set by the teacher) after the assessment of the course, in case the course entails an exam. Handing in or presenting the required spoken and written assignments. Possible online exam.

Completion alternatives

Accreditation of prior learning: spoken and written skills and knowledge of the field-specific language and communication. See Pakki, Peppi eAHOT, and course desrcription. Skills level requirement B2.

Student workload

Contact teaching 30 h, individual, pair and group assignments in Moodle 23 h, self study 20h, assessment and feedback 7 h.

Qualifications

Secondary school studies. Required skills in English: at the minimum, skills level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The entry-level skills are tested at the beginning of studies.
